Kenneth Walker
Kenneth Walker No competition arrives via draft
Thu, May 2, 2024, 9:06 AM
Walker is expected to remain the No. 1 running back for the 2024 season after the Seahawks didn't select a running back in the NFL Draft.
Analysis: The Seahawks did sign George Holani and TaMerik Williams as undrafted free agents, per Michael-Shawn Dugar of The Athletic, but neither player presents a real threat to Walker's job. While Walker and 2023 second-round pick Zach Charbonnet split snaps last season, Walker was still the clear No. 1 back with 219 carries for 905 yards (4.1 YPC) and eight touchdowns. He added 29 receptions for 259 yards and a score. The Seahawks added three linemen in the draft, including third-round pick Christian Haynes, so they're hoping their offensive line will show more consistency this year.
Laviska Shenault
Laviska Shenault Joining Seattle's WR corps
Tue, Apr 2, 2024, 2:42 PM
The Seahawks are in line to sign Shenault, Brady Henderson of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Before landing on IR this past November due to an ankle injury, Shenault recorded 10 catches for 60 yards and 12 carries for 55 yards, while also returning six kickoffs for 167 yards in eight regular-season games with the Panthers. Now presumably past his injury, the 2020 second-rounder will provide wideout depth for the Seahawks behind DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett and Jaxon Smith-Njigba, though initially Shenault's primary impact figures to come as a returner.
Geno Smith
Geno Smith Won't face competition from Howell
Fri, Mar 15, 2024, 8:28 AM
Seahawks GM John Schneider said Thursday that Smith is "the guy" and fellow QB Sam Howell was brought in to be a backup, Brady Henderson of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: That's not exactly surprising given the gaps in both 2023 performance and 2024 compensation between the two quarterbacks, but it'll nonetheless be comforting to anyone counting on Smith to start this upcoming season. It'll be especially good news for Smith if this is Seattle's only big QB move during the offseason, as the team has been mentioned in connection with Justin Fields and various draft prospects. Drafting a QB is definitely still possible, but the trade for Howell is a pretty clear signal that Seattle isn't in on Fields. The team has mostly focused on smaller moves so far this offseason, including re-signing TE Noah Fant and restructuring WR Tyler Lockett's contract. The interior offensive line is a glaring weakness as the roster is currently constructed, but there are still plenty of options to upgrade via both free agency and the 2024 NFL Draft.
Sam Howell
Sam Howell Headed for Seattle
Thu, Mar 14, 2024, 3:24 PM
The Commanders are sending Howell, a fourth-round draft pick and a sixth-rounder to the Seahawks in exchange for third and fifth-round draft choices, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: With Howell no longer in the mix, Washington figures to use the No. 2 overall pick in April's NFL Draft on a new franchise QB. Meanwhile, Howell, who started all 17 of the Commanders' regular-season games in 2023, fills the void created by Drew Lock's departure in free agency and gives the Seahawks an alternative to incumbent No. 1 signal-caller Geno Smith.
Pharaoh Brown
Pharaoh Brown Joining Seahawks
Tue, Mar 12, 2024, 9:58 PM
Brown has agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the Seahawks, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Analysis: Brown is coming off a 2023 campaign that saw him tally 208 yards and one touchdown on 13 receptions for the Patriots. Seattle will be his fifth city across seven seasons. The journeyman will presumably compete for the backup tight end role behind Noah Fant (hand).
Noah Fant
Noah Fant Staying in Seattle
Mon, Mar 11, 2024, 6:51 PM
Fant (hand) agreed to terms on a two-year, $21 million contract with the Seahawks on Monday, Jordan Schultz of BleacherReport.com reports.
Analysis: Fant, a 2019 first-round pick for the Broncos, has accumulated 2,805 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns across his first five seasons. He's coming off a disappointing contract year with Seattle that saw him record 414 yards and no touchdowns on 32 receptions across 17 games. However, the 26-year-old showed enough for the team to continue believing in him as a top option at tight end, which he currently projects to be entering the 2024 campaign due to the departures of both Will Dissly (Chargers) and Colby Parkinson (Rams) in free agency.
Tyler Lockett
Tyler Lockett Restructures deal with Seattle
Sat, Mar 9, 2024, 7:55 PM
Lockett and the Seahawks agreed on a two-year, $30 million restructured contract with a maximum value of $34 million Saturday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Lockett had two years and $34 million remaining on the four-year deal he signed with the team in 2021, so Saturday's deal moves some of the money while he'll get $13 million guaranteed in 2024, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. With the restructured deal, the Seahawks have seemingly added a little more wiggle room to their salary cap situation heading into the official start of NFL free agency Wednesday. Lockett had a down year by his standards in 2023, reeling in 79 receptions for 894 yards and five touchdowns, which represented his lowest yardage and touchdown totals since 2017.
Dee Eskridge
Dee Eskridge Rejoins Seattle
Sat, Mar 9, 2024, 10:30 AM
Eskridge (ribs) signed a one-year, $1.055 million contract with the Seahawks on Friday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Analysis: The 2021 second-round pick has been a massive disappointment given the draft capital invested, but Eskridge has proven to be a decent returner, registering 370 kick return yards over the past two years. The third-year wide receiver has yet to play a full season and most recently missed time last campaign due to a ribs injury that kept him out the final six contests.
Will Dissly
Will Dissly Set to be let go
Tue, Mar 5, 2024, 1:32 PM
The Seahawks are slated to release Dissly, Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times reports.
Analysis: Per the report, the move will free up $6.97 million in salary cap space for Seattle. Dissly, who is coming off a 2023 regular season in which he recorded 17 catches on 22 targets for 172 yards and a touchdown over 16 games, will look to catch on elsewhere as a depth tight end.
Geno Smith
Geno Smith Restructures contract
Thu, Feb 22, 2024, 5:47 PM
Smith and the Seahawks agreed Thursday to a restructured contract, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
Analysis: It's a simple restructure, converting Smith's $9.6 million roster bonus into a signing bonus to create $4.8 million in 2024 cap space (while adding $4.8 million to the 2025 sheet). The Seahawks already signaled intent to bring Smith back as their starting QB in 2024 when they kept him on the roster through mid-February once his $12.7 million base salary became guaranteed. His contract runs through 2025 but doesn't have any guarantees in the final year, potentially setting up the Seahawks for a tough decision next March when Smith is scheduled for a $10 million roster bonus on the fifth day of the 2025 league year. The upcoming NFL Draft could provide a hint about how the Seahawks feel about Smith long term.
Geno Smith
Geno Smith Won't be released to avoid payment
Thu, Feb 15, 2024, 1:09 PM
The Seahawks informed Smith on Thursday that he'll remain on the roster through this week rather than be released to avoid a $12.7 million contract guarantee that kicks in Friday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Smith has two years remaining on the three-year, $75 million contract he signed last offseason, but the deal only had injury guarantees after the first year. His $12.7 million base salary for 2024 is one of those, converting to a full guarantee Feb. 16 (this Friday). Smith then has a $9.6 million roster bonus due March 17, and the Seahawks presumably wouldn't keep him around for now if they didn't also plan to pay that out and have the 33-year-old QB under contract for 2024.
Noah Fant
Noah Fant Tough sledding in contract year
Thu, Feb 1, 2024, 2:21 PM
Fant (hand) recorded 32 receptions for 414 yards and no touchdowns across 17 games during the 2023 regular season.
Analysis: Fant played out the fifth year of his rookie contract, but he posted career lows in receptions, yards and touchdowns. The Iowa product surpassed 50 yards just twice this season. The 26-year-old tight end suffered a hand injury in the season finale. It shouldn't be a long-term issue or affect his value as a free agent in March, but the market may be softened for Fant after such a tough season.
Drew Lock
Drew Lock Solid in limited action
Mon, Jan 29, 2024, 9:27 PM
Lock completed 48 of 76 passes for 543 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions across four games in the 2023 season. He also rushed five times for 14 yards.
Analysis: Lock started two games, finishing with a 1-1 record after a thrilling win over the Eagles in Week 15. The 27-year-old quarterback recorded 7.1 YPA while 10 of his 76 passes went for 20-plus yards. Lock certainly appears to be one of the top backups in the league, but his chances of being a starter in 2024 are slim, especially with a solid rookie quarterback class coming in. Nevertheless, he'll be a free agent in March and could seek a better chance to start elsewhere, as Geno Smith's contract all but guarantees he's the starter in Seattle to begin next season.
Colby Parkinson
Colby Parkinson Finishes with 247 yards
Sun, Jan 21, 2024, 8:35 AM
Parkinson finished the 2023 season with 25 receptions for 247 yards and two touchdowns through 17 games.
Analysis: Parkinson ended up playing more snaps than Will Dissly but fewer than Noah Fant (hand) as the team's No. 2 tight end, averaging 27.6 offensive snaps per game. Both Parkinson and Fant will be free agents in March, while Dissly is signed for the 2024 season, albeit with an unfavorable $10.1 million cap hit. This was Parkinson's second straight season with 25 receptions, so he'll likely be an affordable option if the Seahawks choose to keep him around.
Jake Bobo
Jake Bobo Production fizzles out
Tue, Jan 9, 2024, 7:28 PM
Bobo caught 19 passes (25 targets) for 196 yards and two touchdowns across 17 games in 2023. he also rushed once for a three-yard touchdown.
Analysis: Bobo showed some impressive flashes in the beginning of the season, but that production essentially vanished in the second half of the year. He recorded nine receptions for 61 yards and no touchdowns over the final 10 games. Still, the Seahawks' lack of depth at the position provides Bobo a good opportunity to make the roster again in 2024.
Jaxon Smith-Njigba
Jaxon Smith-Njigba Solid rookie campaign
Tue, Jan 9, 2024, 7:10 PM
Smith-Njigba recorded 63 receptions for 628 yards and four touchdowns across 17 games in the 2023 season.
Analysis: Smith-Njigba was the first wideout off the board in April's draft but finished 10th among all receivers with 628 receiving yards. The Ohio State product was set as the team's No. 3 receiver behind DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett, who combined for more than 2,000 receiving yards. He's still just 21 years old until February, so Smith-Njigba has plenty of runway to improve and look like a top NFL receiver. It will be tough to truly thrive as long as Lockett and Metcalf are around, though.
Will Dissly
Will Dissly Finishes with 17 catches
Tue, Jan 9, 2024, 7:03 PM
Dissly caught all three of his targets for 46 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 21-20 win over the Cardinals. He finished the season with 17 receptions (22 targets) for 172 yards and a touchdown through 16 games in 2023.
Analysis: Dissly had the worst statistical season of his career, as he failed to find the end zone until Week 18 and never caught more than three balls in a game. The Washington product has one year left on his contract with a cap hit of $10.1 million.
DeeJay Dallas
DeeJay Dallas Effective returner in 2023
Tue, Jan 9, 2024, 6:59 PM
Dallas rushed 16 times for 36 yards and caught six of nine targets for 26 yards across 17 games during the 2023 season. He returned 25 punts for 265 yards and 17 kicks for 440 yards (25.9 yards per return).
Analysis: Dallas finished 10th in the league among players with at least 15 punt returns with 10.6 yards per return, and he landed seventh among players with at least 15 kick returns with 25.9 yards per return. He's slated to be a free agent in March. Dallas could stick around with the Seahawks, but he'll have limited offensive impact as long as Kenneth Walker and/or Zach Charbonnet are healthy.
Zach Charbonnet
Zach Charbonnet Complementary role in 2023
Tue, Jan 9, 2024, 6:51 PM
Charbonnet finished the 2023 season with 108 rushes for 462 yards and a touchdown and 33 receptions (40 targets) for 209 yards and no touchdowns.
Analysis: Charbonnet often played around 50 percent of the offensive snaps in a game, but second-year back Kenneth Walker was the clear lead back with 248 touches, 1,164 yards from scrimmage and nine total touchdowns. Despite the lopsided workload, Charbonnet showed promise as a rookie, especially as a pass-catcher. Moreover, his 4.3 YPC with one touchdown on 108 carries compares well to Walker's 4.1 YPC on 218 carries, and it's almost certain that Charbonnet could hold up to an increased workload given his size and ability to do so in college. Still, Charbonnet likely won't see such a workload as long as Walker is in the fold, so he projects as a late-round fantasy pick again in 2024.
Cody White
Cody White Lands reserve/future deal with SEA
Mon, Jan 8, 2024, 6:51 PM
The Seahawks signed White to a reserve/future contract Monday, John Boyle of the team's official site reports.
Analysis: White got into 15 games with Pittsburgh in 2021, but he's seen action in only one NFL contest since. The wideout had two stints with Seattle's practice squad in 2023 and apparently made enough of an impression for the organization to want to hang onto him through the offseason. White will get a chance to compete for a roster spot during training camp this summer.
